About Us
Who We Are
At Keweenaw Jiu Jitsu, we are focused on providing our community with the highest level of martial arts and self defense. Our head instructor Stan Myaskovskiy is a 10th Planet Chicago Black Belt with an impressive competition record. He also has over 13 years of experience training and competing with the best practitioners in the sport. We offer kids, womens, adult Jiu Jitsu classes and we also have a growing kickboxing program for adults 16+.
Our Humble Beginnings
Keweenaw Jiu Jitsu started originally as a grappling club at MTU.
In 2015, Shaughn Kern founded Keweenaw Jiu Jitsu and we started as our own academy running out of the local Houghton Crossfit.
In 2016, Shaughn hired assistant coach Stan Myaskovkiy to help grow the academy and offer more classes. We opened a 2nd location in Lake Linden.
Early 2017 came the news that Shaughn and his family would be relocating to Ohio to pursue new opportunities.
KJJ ownership was then transferred over to Stan Myaskovskiy in early 2017.
In June 2017, KJJ had finally outgrown the space and capacity for classes at Crossfit, and we decided to open our own full time academy in Houghton area! We have since found a new home again in Hancock, MI and are expanding our space in late 2022.
Finally, in 2020, we began to offer P.E. credit classes at MTU and have grown our class sizes from 15, to 25 the following year, and this year we offer 40 spots! We are excited to grow our university offerings and provide great opportunities in the future for our members.
